Ranch History
J. O. Patterson purchased
homesteads in the late 1800's as they became available. The ranch that he amassed was
initially called "Lost Lake Land and Livestock". By 1904, J.O. was
appointed postmaster of Lost Lake. He began raising sheep, but later the livestock was
converted to all cattle. J. O. retired after World War 2. His daughter, Anne Jurgens and
her husband, Louis, took over the operation. They raised Hereford cattle and converted some
of the land to farming.
In 1968, Bill and Dolores Harrer purchased this ranch and since then it has been called "Harrer's Lost Lake Ranch". The Hereford cattle were gradually changed to an all Angus operation, reflecting the Harrer Angus roots. The Great Plains Conservation was utilized to help build fences and lay pipelines in order to control grazing and water distribution. The land and buildings are owned by the Harrer family corporation. Maintaining and improving the environment is a primary goal of all.
